About Mike

Mike is a hardworking family man.

Mike was raised in a small, rural coal-mining town where principles of hard work, honesty and integrity were deeply instilled. To earn enough money to pay for his college, Mike worked as a laborer for brick masons in Overland Park. In another state, he also laid asphalt, drove a dump truck, and managed the office for a small framing company. Mike understands the ups and downs of the construction world. He knows how it feels to work in a full-time, physically demanding job under the hot summer sun. Mike understands what it is like to be the low man on the totem pole—particularly where the bottom line is more important to the employer than the employee’s safety.

Mike married his sweetheart, Tammy, in November 1996. Mike and Tammy moved to Independence in 2001 after Mike finished law school, graduating with honors while working to support his family while Tammy stayed home with their young children. To provide for his family prior to graduating, Mike clerked with the Missouri Attorney General’s Office where he focused on consumer protection. He also worked part-time for two small law firms and did an externship for a state Supreme Court Justice.

Mike and Tammy are the parents of six children, ages 2 to 13. They love Independence and have chosen this place to raise their family. They passionately believe that strong families help build strong communities and a strong America. Residing in a safe neighborhood is very important to them. Their children attend public schools and participate in a number of community activities.

Mike is a professional who excels.

Mike likes to joke: “Not all attorneys are bad. It’s just the other 98% that give the rest of us a bad name!” Indeed, he truly stands out in his profession. Mike is a commercial bankruptcy attorney who defends creditors and protects their rights in complex bankruptcy matters. He also represents companies that need to restructure their debt obligations. As a highly proficient Spanish speaker, Mike defended the country of the Dominican Republic and its state-owned electric utility against enforcement of an adverse foreign arbitration award. He has also represented the receivers of insolvent insurance carriers on various issues including a landmark tax refund case.

Mike is one of only twelve Missouri attorneys who has become Board Certified in Business Bankruptcy by the American Board of Certification.* He has spoken at national, regional and local conferences on various bankruptcy topics. He has published numerous articles nationally and internationally in various well-respected bankruptcy publications. Mike was named as a 2011 Missouri & Kansas Super Lawyer—an honor given to only 5% of the lawyers in Missouri and Kansas.  He was previously identified in 2008, 2009 & 2010 as a Missouri & Kansas“Rising Star.®” by Missouri & Kansas Super Lawyers magazine.

In 2006, Mike served as lead attorney in the successful Chapter 11 reorganization of St. Louis based Fortress Women’s Center which provides shelter and counseling services for homeless and abused women and children. In addition to this pro bono representation, he has also employed his legal skills in representing the less fortunate in various other matters. Mike currently serves on the board for the Kansas City Chapter of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society whose mission is to “strive through public service and professional excellence to promote fairness and virtue founded upon the rule of law.” Mike is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he has served in numerous church leadership positions over the years.

Mike has integrity and respects others.

Mike understands that strong moral character is essential for governmental leaders. Indeed, he zealously strives to be completely honest and just in his dealings with others. He believes that love and service to one’s neighbor are of the utmost importance. Mike knows that we are all of equal importance and, as such, should be treated accordingly.

Mike encourages you to invite him to your neighborhood gatherings, clubs, church groups, business lunches, and other groups to hear him explain his vision and goals for the City of Independence.

*The American Board of Certification's Business Bankruptcy certification program is accredited by the American Bar Association.  Neither the Supreme Court of Missouri nor the Missouri Bar reviews or approves organizations or special designations.
